The age old traditions of decking the halls with boughs of holly and setting up a tree have been around for many years. Plants and trees that remained green year round had special meaning for people in the winter months. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away evil spirits. People dating all the way back to ancient Egypt would decorate their homes with greenery in celebration of the Winter Solstice which meant that spring and prosperity were near. Today, around the world, people set up trees in their homes in celebration of the holiday season. About 35-40 million Christmas trees are bought in the United States every year. The largest producer of Christmas trees among other states is Oregon.
