University of Oregon Ducks from Mac to Matt

As the countdown to Selection Sunday begins, everyone in Eugene is starting to wonder will the University of Oregon Ducks make it into March Madness? As the question lingers we ask ourselves about the journey that the Ducks have made in the last two years from Mac to Matt.

McArthur Court opened in 1927 as the home arena for the Oregon Ducks Basketball and Volleyball teams. Over the years, countless records and memories have been formed, and in 2001 McArthur Court was named by Sporting News as the “Best Gym in America” for its character, atmosphere, and rich history.  Prior to 2011, when it was replaced as the Ducks’ home arena, Mac Court was the 2nd oldest on-campus arena in the nation.

In 2010, construction began on the Matthew Knight Arena.  In true University of Oregon fashion, Matthew Knight Arena is a first-class stadium featuring stunning architectural design and innovative technology.  With its emphasis on energy efficiency and other eco-friendly iniatives, Matthew Knight Arena was designed with the goal of becoming the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold arena in the NCAA.  In addition, Matthew Knight Arena was designed to incorporate the history and spirit of Mac Court by including features such as the uniquely designed Kilkenny Floor, which is a nod to the “Tall Firs,” the nickname of Oregon’s National Champion basketball team in 1939.

The first game was played at Matthew Knight Arena on January 13th, 2011.  Since that time, the University of Oregon Men’s basketball team has completed 2 seasons, and has the potential to finish this 3rd season with a slot in the NCAA Championship Tournament.
